Operations and Maintenance - Telescoping Valves

The Troy Valve telescoping valve incorporates several unique features:

  • Self braking/self locking operator
  • Adjustable split wiper gasket, allowing easy replacement
  • Easy to operate rack and pinion operator
  • See through cover for rack

Operations:

The Troy Valve telescoping valve operator has no separate locking mechanism to engage or disengage. There is no adjustment required either. Operation is simply to use hand wheel to adjust height of tube as required.

The see-through slip tube allows the operator to mark setting heights that are regularly used, right on the acrylic cover.

Maintenance:

The rack should be kept greased. Grease whenever the rack does not show obvious grease present. A grease fitting is provided on the gear box over the operating gears. This should be greased at least annually. A standard heavy machine grease is adequate.

The wiper gasket can be adjusted by tightening or loosening the gasket gland. If the wiper gasket must be replaced, simply remove the bolts holding down the gasket gland, slide the gland up, remove the split gasket and replace with a new split gasket from Troy Valve. Order replacement gaskets by the diameter of the slip tube. Parts are available through Troy Valve, 800-232-4442.

Installation:

Telescoping valves and the receiving pipe must be installed completely vertically and in line. The telescoping slip tube must be able to travel up and down the receiving tube without hitting or scraping the inside of the receiving pipe.

Unscrew lift rod (6)(GB-36) from shipping location inside slip tube. Put rack (3) (GB-13) into top of gear box, turning hand wheel (4)(GB-24) to engage teeth and move rack all the way down. Thread short threaded end with washer and nut into the bottom of the rack (3)(GB-13).

Install companion flange (13)(GB-42) to riser pipe. Slide gasket retainer (11)(GB-40) and the split gasket (12)(GB-41) onto slip tube from bottom, leaving clearance to slide slip tube (10)(GB-39) into riser pipe. Screw long threaded end of slip rod (6)(GB-36) into crossbar of bail (8)(GB-37-02). The tube can be adjusted up or down 4 inches by threading the tube/bail higher or lower on the lower threaded end of the lift rod. When properly positioned, install jam nut (9)(GB-38) and tighten. Slide gasket (12)(GB-41) and gasket retainer (11)(GB-40) down to companion flange (13) (GB-42) tighten lightly. Over tightening may make valve hard to operate. Grease rack and gear box, install rack cover (1)(GB-23).
