Stem Guides - Valve Operators

TROY VALVE offers stem guides for providing support to long valve extension stems. Stem guides are available for adjustment for up to 35” from the face of the wall to the centerline of the stem.

Stem Guides are offered in Cast Ductile Iron or Cast 316 Stainless Steel. The Cast Ductile Iron stem guide is provided with a bronze bushing bored to the proper diameter for your extension.

Typical Specification – Stem Guides

The guide and mounting bracket shall be (ductile iron) or (316 stainless steel) and designed to allow adjustment in two directions for accurate field placement. The guide shall be accurately machined to allow free movement of the extension stem. The guide/bracket shall be TROY VALVE model (A25680 Ductile Iron) or (A25680_316SS 316 Stainless Steel) or approved equal.

Stem Guides – Often stem guides are required to prevent bowing of the extension stem that is caused by the relationship of the slenderness of the vertical column to its overall length. A general rule of thumb is to apply EULER’S formula for slender columns

Slenderness Ratio – the slenderness ratio is the ratio of the overall length of the stem to its radius. It is recommended that support be provided so that the ratio does not exceed 200. L = length of column in inches r = least radius of gyration

L/r = Slenderness Ratio <= 200 If the ratio exceeds 200 the column is so slender that the buckling or bending mode of failure predominates over compression failure.
